International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) offers a continuum of international education. The programmes encourage both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in their studies and in their personal development.

A challenging framework designed to encourage students to make practical connections between what they learnt and the real world, the IB MYP program comprises of 8 subject groups, Language acquisition, Language and literature, Individuals and societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and health education and Design. The MYP seeks to assist students in developing their own understanding of their community, sense of responsibility and critical thinking.

Students learn best when their learning experiences are connected to their lives and their experience of the world. Big idea concepts can really be better grasped by students by breaking them down into relevant disciplines across different subject areas. By imparting the skills of independent learning and application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar context, students are encouraged to learn how to learn independently.

GRADES: 7 TO 10
AGE GROUP: 12 TO 16 YEARS

HWA’s IB MYP is a four-year intensive programme comprising eight subject groups: Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education, Arts, and Design. As adolescents mature through the course of their IB education, teachers will guide and expose them to more and more situations and stimuli, developing their inquiry skills at an age-appropriate level, and providing global contexts for learning.

At heart, the MYP goes beyond teaching to encourage students to apply newly acquired knowledge to solve contemporary challenges that the world faces. Every year, students in the MYP engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups. MYP students are also assigned a long-term project for which they have to demonstrate their ability to decide on topics of interests, and explore
it in their own unique and independent ways.

Assessment:
Assessment is considered a core component of student learning.

Assessment is an integral part of the MYP programme and is conducted on continuous basis. The Final Assessment takes place at the end of the semester in order to determine the levels individual students have achieved in relation to the stated objectives for each subject group and MYP projects.

The Personal Project helps students prepare to move into the high school (DP) Diploma Programme. Students have the opportunitiy to put into practice important skills that contribute to their success with all aspects of the Diploma Programme and their future educational endeavours.

Teachers apply appropriate sets of assessment tasks and the MYP criteria to each of the subject groups. The types of assessment tools available but not limited to, are:

- Oral work
- Written work
- Practical work

Grades from 1 (Lowest) to 7 (Highest) are awarded to students for each subject, and for the personal project, according to pre-defined grade boundaries based on the levels students have achieved, as per the MYP’s best fit approach.
