Art Appreciation Week at HWA: A Celebration of Creativity, Inquiry, and Expression

Last week, HWA International School was transformed into a vibrant hub of imagination as we celebrated Art Appreciation Week, an inspiring event designed to deepen students’ connection to the arts while reinforcing key values of the IB education. Aligned with the IB learner profile, this special week encouraged students to be inquirers, communicators, and reflective thinkers, as they explored various forms of artistic expression and honored the contributions of renowned artists throughout history.

Students from across the school engaged in meaningful, hands-on activities, developing their own 2D, 3D, and relief artworks. The week began with a focus on 3D forms, where students used foam blocks to create subtractive sculptures inspired by Henry Moore. Through this tactile experience, they gained a deeper understanding of form, space, and perspective—core elements in both visual arts and design thinking.
Students also explored relief art using layered cardboard, allowing them to think critically about depth and composition. These activities supported the development of fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and creative problem-solving—all of which are essential components of a holistic IB education.

At the City Campus, our PYP (Primary Years Programme) students took their creativity even further by stepping into the enchanting Balloon Kingdom—a whimsical space where imagination soared. Through play-based exploration and design, young learners developed their social-emotional skills, strengthened their collaborative abilities, and discovered the joy of learning through the arts.

Art Appreciation Week at HWA was more than just an art celebration—it was an immersive educational journey that embodied the spirit of the IB curriculum. By fostering creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness, it ignited a lifelong appreciation for the arts and empowered students to express themselves confidently in a global context.
